The most terrifying film you will ever experience? I don't really think so! So the tagline doesn't really get into, i'm not going to be rude on it though, cause they've tried something real and uncommon and i really appreciate the effort that they really put into this movie.
So this is an remake of the old classic horror flick directed by Sam Riami "Evil Dead" and that was a surprise hit in those days though and still one of my favourite horror films of all time. Alright, they are few things that need to be compared here, cause its a actual remake and the story line matches to some extent. But the actual attempt is the thing to be pleased about. Horror remakes were not so successful these days, but this worked out to some extent.
Now, the plot really deals with the massacres of few unlucky fellas one by one, who were not really linked up with the actual sin, but only for waking up the evil by rattling out few words and other factors. So the rise of the Evil!
Frames up with a dark scene initially where the father tends to burn her daughter alive because of the evil inside her and he was guided and accompanied with few other disabled fags whom i really don't want to talk about. So the father burns her daughter alive and shoots her before death because of the sentimental shade.
After few days/months a gang of five buds heads to the cabin in the woods for help/protect Mia (Jane Levy) get over the drug addiction thing. Few random incidents lead them to the basement where the first massacre (father-daughter) took place and they find a book and few animals hooked up burned. After all the stinky kind off environment surrounded there they get rid off it and weird things starts happening around the place. Things happen exactly like it was written in the book and shit just turns real which will wake up the sleeping evil which will in turn do its thing as in common.
The fun thing (pretty much a weird one) i really enjoyed in the movie was the usage of adult words, i mean they were soo clear ever before. That's gross! But the other thing i really wanna appreciate is the less usage of the CGI works, there is more practical work done out there, which is needed for a horror genre i feel. Likewise in few scenes, the usage of the gore and the blood was legitimate enough. Blood spilling out everywhere they say, I really enjoyed that blood curdling creepy part of the movie.
Regardless of all the things i previously stated, this is not really a movie which makes you freaked out with all the scary, insane kind of things. The script was actually moving and shows nothing new because its a remake, you cant really change the plot. Maybe we've seen enough after the actual Evil Dead. This is not just the normal horror which passes by the summer, this is way better when compared to the remake department movies. The characters were not that promising, like they were half dead in the first 40 mins itself. They don't carry out that petrifying, daunting feel. They were like, ok lets get out of this shit. Inspite the evils too, i thought that there will be a dark kinda vibe created when they show up but they really don't. It naively transmits from one soul to other which i really don't understand why?
Jane Levy and Shiloh Fernandez were quite proficient, that sister-brother relationship impression worked out between them. Especially Jane, the frightening, emotional feel that she carried out whenever they were needed is the thing to be appreciated.
The direction from Fede Alvarez was quite imposing in few parts, they kept the movie interesting and engaging. More brutal and more stirring, maybe the plot got lost in times, the screenplay can be a little more appealing. But this is ok, agreeable for an remake. The background score was promising, the siren kinda sound they experimented was terrifying.
And Eh!!! there is this one scene where Mia gets raped by a tree and that was really fun to watch, not that disgusting, its pretty much normal. Sounds bizarre but that just happened. Should get over it!
Finally, this Evil Dead really beat the shit outta me and could be enjoyed for a random watch in theatres. If horror things is really your thing, go watch it once. I like to give it for their presentation and effort. So its genuinely a good remake with the same story it really works. Evil Dead fans will love it along with the normal moviegoers.
My Rating - 3/5
