Ok, so "Ek Thi Daayan"! The plot revolves around Bobo (Emraan Hashmi) who is a top magician around India and suffers with some kinda hallucination problems, but after all the pain and nuisance he was surrounded with, he takes the help of his personal doctor who takes him back to his past by hypnosis. And Bobo explains a petrifying story about Diana (Konkona Sen Sharma) who really ruined his life by slaughtering his father and younger sister. Even after Bobo finds a way to get rid of her, she augurs that she will comeback to haunt him.
Jumping back to the present life, Bobo is now been superannuated with no problems and he leads a happy matrimonial life with his girlfriend Tamara (Huma Quereshi). Everything seems fine until Lisa Dutt (Kalki Koechilin) enters to the sight. Bobo believes her as the actual daayan who returned for her retaliation. So is Lisa the actual daayan? or is there something else to drag about? that drives the plot till the end.
The writers Vishal Bhardwaj, Mukul Sharma and Kannan Iyer had scribbled out a different story with some kinda witch which can change things around and can easily dispatched when her hair is cut through. Few parts were probably scary, like the creepy lizard scenes and others which are not absolutely terrifying but slightly entertaining.
Talking about the main strength of the movie, the first half, thats kept really enthralling , but im really disappointed that Emraan didn't share much of screen presence in the first half. Thats the drawback but the story really unfolded in many directions which can be dealt after. But the second half really failed to uphold the thrill being setup previously.
Performances, im really stunned with Konkona's brave act, she really was the main plus of the movie and she was radiant in her black shaded witch characterized role. Emraan Hashmi, was good, maybe he was given a less impactful role on the whole. Huma and Kalki were decent, their roles were crafted really well and the three lady lead was never a let down.
The direction was really impressive from a debutant, really should appreciate Kannan Iyer for an brave attempt but not a remarkable one. He totally scored well in the first half, but the second could have been kept diverting. The other department's work was quite splendid, the cinematography and the set design was exceptional with all the archaic sets they used. Background score really impressed in few areas.
They are few unbelievable fun tricks shown in the movie. Eh! Emraan turns around a normal spectator into a ghost. Huh! Some really left me with shock, they are soo stupid. Thats true, the director can do something unnatural and silly for the viewer satisfaction. This is something unnecessary to spot out, but gotta tell you these things.
This is undoubtedly not a daunting flick which will not leave you with some sort of fear when you leave the theatre. Maybe, this is tried out in a different way, not the usual ones we discern. This is certainly not happening i gotta say, the direction was pretty much spellbinding and so does the screenplay, but when it comes to the plot, that went wrong, pretty much lacked in the horror impact which is very disinteresting to share with. Just a weekend pick if you're really excited about it.
