Verdict: “A groovy subject with mediocre narration”.
Now! Satyagraha is a modern take on political cinema. How often we see youngsters tweeting about the corrupted government issues? I rather see this as an improvement.
Dwaraka Anand (Amitabh Bachchan) is a fundamentalist who is an ex-principal of a government school. After his engineer son's brutal death in a road accident, minister Balaram Singh (Manoj Bajpai) proclaims a compensation of 25 lakh rupees and asserts his condolences. With the government's negligence of repaying the money, Dwaraka Anand rushes into collectorate office and slaps the collector for being inattentive and gets imprisoned.
Manav (Ajay Devgn) a close pal to Dwaraka's family starts a trivial revolution with the help of the youth by socialises the truth behind the whole issue on facebook and twitter. The government gets into a flustered situation which eventually turns into a war between the public and the government.
Setup on a political backdrop, the storyline needed an emotional depth with flawless narration. Satyagraha being on the lighter side, doesn't enthuse the audience for a while as its been dragged in few sequences and is been forced to end the play abruptly which lacked in exhilaratiion and anticipation.
Prakash Jha's strong subject worked upto some levels, but the screenplay got a little shabby at times. Maybe he's not clear with his subject, few dramatic sequences really took me to the elevated level, but I'm not totally blown away.
Mainly in the second half, when we clearly know what's gonna happen next, the director still adds something new to it and tries to drag the intense, well crafted subject into a boring one. But that's not exceedingly done and the impact was clearly dispalyed in the climax which never got my attention except for Amitabh's part.
Performances from the cast were terrific, Amitabh Bachchan and Ajay Devgn carried out the movie really well with their remarkable acting skills and were the backbone of the movie. Kareena, Rampal, Amrita and Bajpai tailored their characters perfectly and portrayed them in a pleasing way.
I really liked the modern take on the movie, which was just an initiative in a comprehending world of Indian cinema.
To conclude, Satyagraha had an amazing cast and a good storyline but the narration of the movie was certainly a let down. Its a easy one time watch and it may enthuse the first category of audience. I recommend watching it once for its genuine subject and remarkable performances.
PS: It may not excite you if you're into the commercial genre.
My Rating - 2.5/5
