Verdict: “A deep and a brilliant political storyteller”
Exceedingly we should cheer-up the film-makers and producers who show up with thoughtful and historic subjects which are really needed to uncover for this generation. Madras Cafe is one of those films which exposed the circumstances and facts of the deadly assassination of our former prime minister in a well elaborated way. Credits to Shoojit Sircar for attempting it.
Set back in the mid 80's where the Sri Lankan civil war is taking place. RAW agent Vikram Singh (John Abraham) is been sent by the Indian govt. to scrutinize the underground operations operated by the Tamil Rebels leader Anna (Ajay Ratnam). After few surveillance tasks Vikram realizes that there is something beyond the whole dispute which is assassinating the ex prime minister of India. The main plot of the movie circles around this intense subject which is definitely worth a watch.
Straight up, I really dig into these kinda subjects and Madras Cafe was never a let down in any aspect. The movie sets off with the right pace and never confronts with a bump in the storyline which is indeed very strong and unique. It unmasks the curious operations which happened around in that era and surely gives us the perfect intuitions which are needed.
John Abraham was terrific in his appearance and really polished up his acting skills when compared to his previous movies. That intensity and passion which was needed was well portrayed by him. Nargis Fakhri shines in a small role which was important to the movie and she had done a fine job. The other actors immersed into their characters which was quite compelling.
Shoojit Sircar was indeed very clear on what he was delivering and explaining it to the people. He portrayed the emotional sequences with seamless drama and intensity. And also about the research he had done along with the writers must be appreciated. Rendering a dark and and a serious subject was no joke and a brave director like Shoojit was never petrified to open up the truth to the newer generation.
The cinematography was picture-perfect and fine-looking, mainly capturing a movie with an old backdrop is a bit risky job to handle. But I don't understand why the shaky cam thing was implemented here which I got a lil' bit fuzzy at times.
The background score was brilliant, although the songs were an exception throughout the movie. The background smacked the impact and really went along with the movie.
To sum it up, MADRAS CAFE was a powerful thriller which opens up many things in Indian history with expounded explanation. Certainly not the usual bollywood movie which concentrate only on entertainment. It's serious, strong and definitely worth a watch if you needed a fresh subject.
