Verdict: "Appalling and a pointless thriller with few poor technical aspects".
How about a movie with a predictable plot and an awful narration. "After Earth" absolutely got nothing to prove but tries to prove something which was bizarre and unnecessary. M. Night Shyamalan, the man who had directed few good movies in the past had lost his pace with his previous disaster 'The Last Airbender' and had continued his terrible form in "After Earth" too. This is not an adventure nor a storyteller its just an attempt by Will Smith to push up his son's acting career to safer levels.
The movie takes place 1000 years into the future in an post apocalyptic world where humans explore a new planet called "Nova Prime" which was beyond the solar system. The reason behind this new exploration is that Earth is been invaded by aliens (monsters), and inturn humans got no choice other than discovering some other odd place for living. Back to Nova Prime, humans act weird in a more cybernetic way where civilization become more virtual and disciplined. Cypher (Will Smith) is a commander of the rangers army who invents a new skill called 'ghosting' which was helpful to defend themselves against the monsters (Usra's) and plans to retire from his services after the one last mission which is about to start eventually.
On the other side, Kitai (Jaden Smith) is an ranger student who is outstanding in his skills but lacks discipline and thinking. After being rebuffed as an ranger he returns home with sorrow thinking his father would be disappointed with his status. After few counsels by his mother Kitai joins his father in a mission which was about to take place in space. After crash landing on earth due to few asteroid attacks Kitai has to travel to the tail end of the ship to activate an emergency beacon which was located a 100 kms away from the actual point. Cypher being injured, motivates and prepares his son for an do or die mission. How did Kitai end up successfully covers the other side of the story.
The thing about the movie is that its not really interesting at any point, the adventure/action scenes build up at a good pace but end up brusquely. The whole movie specifics Kittai being a dud not following his father's instructions and proves that he's not actually an asshole of how people expect him to be. They are few segments in the movie which can really enthuse the audience but they don't. They are been narrated in a part to part way which can actually be suitable at any point.
Jaden Smith shares a prolonged screen presence but he really don't utilize that chance. The kid got the skill but lacks something that his father has. His middle age toned voice and his miserable facial expressions even at a blissful moment really annoys me. And yet again proves that he really cant handle the whole movie on his own shoulders. Will Smith, even though is decent in his performance is been wasted for such an fallow unimportant role in the movie. It looks like he's been forced to play as an instructor only because Jaden is playing the lead. Any other artist could have done justice to his role, but its utterly not needed to star Will Smith in such a mediocre movie.
Director M. Night Shyamalan totally got wrong and misleaded his technical departments with an uninteresting story and narration. The CGI was a big blunder in the movie, the animals look fake and it lacks the realism that is to be portrayed without a glitch when you attempt an Sci-Fi. Few shots were remarkable and fantastic, but the amount of shit been carried out around do not balance the perfectness in the movie.
These guys were not pre-planned, it looks like Will Smith showed up with a different kinda plot but the director don't really like it as he tries to add unnecessary things to make it look like a Sci-Fi/Adventure.
Finally, After Earth is not really a disaster but its an disappointment for the fans. M. Night Shyamalan is faded out director for now and could be more effective when he does movies with less commercial values. This could be much much better if they have concentrated on it more. Its not a definite watch, but if you're completely excited about it watch it once otherwise its surely an rental.
