Verdict: “Sturdy and Exhilarating”
In the year 2154, the civilization on earth becomes hopeless, the poor were left in agony, whereas the rich construct a whole new planet called Elysium for their own improvement. Circled in these outrageous circumstances, how does a ordinary individual named Max bear out his only unfeasible dream? This is "Elysium".
Max (Matt Damon) is an ex-con who is in need for a daily job and travelling to Elysium is been his only wish since childhood. After being exposed to destructive radiations in an unexpected way, his life was now in danger and immediate medication or hospitality will not work.
The only hope left for him is to travel to Elysium, where futuristic medical facilities are available. In order get it done, Max accepts a deal with a local mob leader Spider (Wagner Moura) which leads into a brutal conflict between him and a sleeper agent Kruger (Sharlto Copley).
Well! What did I like about Elysium was the layered plot which is perfectly delivered. Max confronting Agent Kruger was not the only thing, the film dealt with a major health issue that was widely spread all over the place and they are in desperate need of medication which can only be provided by Elysium.
Even with it's trifling plot, the movie still continued to maintain an impeccable pace, which was quite an obligatory thing for a sci-fi drama. Nevertheless, I can pull out few minor flaws in the plot regarding few scenes which were not quite necessary for a forthright thriller.
Direction from Neill Blomkamp was remarkable, he's clear with his thoughts and contemplations, the overpopulated fruitless future on earth and pitiless culture on Elysium was very well shown and picturised. The shaky cam is been overused, mainly during the climax where the two leads confront each other in a fight, the elation is completely missed which turned out into a slightly dissatisfying climax.
Matt Damon impressed with his action and combat skills and is a complete delight to watch him back again in action dramas. Jodie Foster as the Elysium secretary pulled out a decent job, although her accent was a little bit annoying at times, it's tolerable. Sharlto Copley character was a little bit under developed, I never felt that he was the real badass villain in the movie, and that's the major issue about the movie, I didn't really care about the characters and their emotional drama, it was just lifeless.
Overall, Elysium is a badass sci-fi film with all the key ingredients, it has got a strong storyline to care about and I probably see it coming in the near future. The camera work and visuals were outstanding and is definitely worth a watch in theatres if you're a big fan of sci-fi flicks.
