Broken City - Review
Broken City is an 2013 film starring Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe. The film was directed by Allen Hughes and written by Brian Tucker.
Synopsis : Police officer Billy (Mark Wahlberg) is been struck in a contentious shooting in NYC but Mayor Hostetler (Russell Crowe) keeps Billy out of jail and was stripped out of his badge. Seven year later, Billy now remakes himself as a private investigator but finds hard to make money. Mayor Hostetler now calls up Billy and asks to investigate his wife's outdoor activities as shes been linked up with another guy. Billy sets up the deal and was recompensed with $50,000.
But the story is not as simple as it seems to be, Mayor Hostetler has another intent other than the investigation. Billy have to risk his life to expose the truth that he later on discovers. An assortment of twists with the political drama all around sets up the other side of the story.
Cast : The two powerful sources with multiple Oscars and Golden Globes Mark Wahlberg and Russel Crowe are truly been wasted. Both their roles were quite conventional. But the performances were quite skillful and proficient. Russel plays a very confident and aggressive mannered Mayor in which he performed well within his bounds and Mark does it with good ease but at some extent his action seems monotonous and tedious. Catherine Zeta-Jones shows up in few scenes and was partly unused.
Direction : Allen Hughes (Director) kicks of the movie interestingly and continues it with good twists and turns but the sudden swap in the storyline at the end completely turns down a good action-thriller experience. Mainly the roles were quite stale which are been shown several times like the corrupt politicians and the promiscuous wives. Allen came up with a good script but with a unplanned narration.
Final Verdict : Broken City has all the big names on the screen but were not quite suitable for such an action/political drama. This was OK. Watch it once.
My Rating - 2.5/5
