Glad that in this crappy year for movies "Olympus Has Fallen" is a stand out, some serious work and action stuffed in a normal predictable thriller and thats "Olympus Has Fallen" for you. So, lets get into the review.
Firstly i wanna point out few good and bad points in the film. Some things worked out brilliantly and few didnt. Here we go,
Few funny one liners
So, Olympus Has Fallen deals with the attack on the Whitehouse. Gerald Butler is an personal secretary for the president (Aaron Eckhart) who is taken out of his detail after his offhand mislead in the accident transpired to the president convoy which leads to the death of the president's wife. After 18 months, the Koreans take down the Whitehouse in few minutes and demands for some launch codes having the president and few other district officials as their hostages. So Gerald Butler fights back and finally rescues the president and gets his detail and status back.
The plots looks simple, but its not a simple thing to deal with. The research should be done well and the director should be assertive with what he is presenting on screen. Antoine Fuqua the director of Training Day had done a pretty neat job, he choose a brave and a different script when compared to his previous flicks and the intent that he kept was spot on and action factor continued throughout the film was impeccable.
Everything seems perfect and decent in the movie, but why couldn't the CGI be flawless? It can clearly been seen that they used some kinda background layer on the shoot and the shootout with the jets and helicopters looked awful, worthless complete shit. Why couldnt the visual effect department justify this plot? Is the director silly from his side? I dont think so, they wouldn't have thought that this could turn appaling. The only big drawback of the film and they could have been keen in their work.
Talking about the cast, Gerald Butler is completely terrific, apart from all the romantic comedies he previously acted in, this role is a far better responsible one for him. He justified the role, he was sincere in his work, although he was taken out from his detail he didnt turn down and that emerging courage crammed in his character was the thing that impressed me alot. Aaron Eckhart was all the same, he usually impresses in his politically responsible roles likewise we've seen him as a district attorney Harvey Dent in TDK and this role is not a complete contrast when compared but it had the same shades in all aspects.
Morgan Freeman is the acting president in the film, his role didnt have much to offer but in his little screen appearance he was impressive, i dont like the fact that he is doing alot of presidental roles, he gotta change something, looking foward to his role in Oblivion.
Have to mention about the work they have done on taking down the Whitehouse, the Koreans simply gets into and slaughters everyone in less than 15 minutes and the actual plan was exceptional.
Finally, Olympus Has Fallen is not such a bad movie, it has all the action jam packed in it. It deals with emotion and territorial responsibilities and turned out to be more interesting than i really expected. So if you want some ass kicking all around this is ur right pick for ur summer. Il go with a three star for this Antonie Fuqua directional.
